Dr. Katherine Shen sees pediatric, teen, and adult patients. She specializes in pediatric and teen eye health and vision care, Optometric Vision Therapy, as well as eye disease in adult patients. She diagnoses and treats cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and problems in the eyes caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, and other eye diseases. Dr. Katherine Shen is residency trained in pediatrics, Optometric Vision Therapy, and eye diseases.
Dr. Katherine Y. Shen is a native of Bellevue, Washington. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and her doctorate degree from State University of New York College of Optometry in New York City. While a student, she received the student of the year award from the Optometric Physicians of Washington. After graduation, she is one of only two optometrists in the country to have completed a residency in community health through the New England College of Optometry in Boston. Her residency training specializes in ocular disease, specialty contact lens, pediatrics, and vision therapy. During that year, she worked in conjunction with the director of retinal service at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital.
After residency, Dr. Shen worked as a clinical assistant professor with the New England College of Optometry before joining Specialty Eyecare Group. She has a passion for children’s eye care, strabismus and amblyopia vision development, vision therapy, as well as treating and managing ocular diseases. Dr. Shen works in conjunction with Evergreen Health’s Rehabilitation Center by co-managing patients with acquired brain injuries. Dr. Shen enjoys teaching and presenting to local parent groups and other physicians, as well as being actively involved with the InfantSEE® program, a national public health program that provides complimentary comprehensive eye assessments for infants 6 months to 1 year old. She also writes articles for the journal Review of Optometry and is the corresponding editor for ophthalmology doctors in China regarding ocular diseases. She is an officer with the Optometric Physicians of Washington and is an active member with the American Optometric Association. Dr. Shen is working on becoming a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and being board certified in visual development and vision therapy with COVD.
Dr. Shen also speaks Mandarin, Shanghaiese, and Spanish. In her free time she loves to travel, go on mission trips, try new restaurants, fellowship with her friends, and spend time with family.
